Dumpster rental cost estimator (2026)

Size, metro, days, placement, and expected overage — the four line items that turn an "as low as $199" headline into the real bill. Ranges are the same public‑range cells as our city × size table; nothing here is a quote.

Methodology, assumptions & sources
  • Base price = the national baseline range for the size (from public price guides) × the metro cost factor — the same cells published in the city × size comparison. "Other U.S. metro" uses factor 1.00 (the national baseline).
  • Extension = days beyond the included window × the metro's typical per‑day extension range. Most haulers include 7–10 days; the included‑days field is yours to change.
  • Overage = tons over the included weight × the metro's typical per‑ton overage range. Included tonnage is usually 1–4 tons and is not published per metro, so enter your own expected overage; heavy debris (roofing, concrete, dirt) hits limits fast.
  • Permit = the metro's typical right‑of‑way permit range when placed on a public street; $0 on private property. "Other" metros show "varies". Permit links point to the city source used.
  • Ranges are public‑range estimates, not quotes. Taxes, fuel surcharges, and prohibited‑item fees are excluded. Sources: Angi/HomeAdvisor, Hometown Dumpster Rental, WM. Last verified 2026-09-11.

How to read the estimate

The base line is the national range for that size scaled by the metro's cost factor (disposal fees, labor, transport). Extension only appears when your rental runs past the included window. Overage is per ton over the included weight — the single biggest surprise on most invoices. Permit applies only when the box sits on a public street.

Cheaper moves

  • Size up one class rather than paying overage on dense debris.
  • Keep the box in the driveway to skip the permit and the signage lead time.
  • Schedule pickup the day you finish — extension days add up fast.
  • Ask for included days and included tons in writing before delivery.
